Dear Carl:
Turntables big enough to turn a Big Boy? Oh, yes. These turntables
were at Cheyenne, Green River, North Platte, and I am sure a couple more.
Not many, but a few.
The turntable that was the real determiner for the Union Pacific was for the
Challenger. (4-6+6-4). It was the 'big one'. The 800s came after this.
Any 4-8-4 with tender could be up to the length of these turntables. So the
UP FEF series ended up longer than they need to be because there wasn't any
need to shorten them up.
Note the size of the Reading T1. It is a 'pocket' Northern when
compared to a UP FEF-3 or an SP GS-4.
