I prefer the American Models/OTT Machine Services 2 button controller to the stand-alone Lionel button they supplied with sound-equipped sets. The Lionel button slows the train down when you activate the horn/bell. I think there is about a 1.5-2 volt drop across the diodes inside. The AM controller seems to have a voltage drop all the time, so you don't notice a change in train speed when you press the buttons.
