Why is it ridiculous?  It's called a donation.  People do it all the time for worthy 
causes.  What's wrong with that?

  Lots of railfans and civil war frreaks would probably chip in ten bucks
  apiece, and you can reach them easily through the internet.  Perhaps you
  could get the sale suspended while you work out the details.  But for YOU
  to say that HE should make a huge financial sacrifice is ridiculous.  He's
  not selling body parts here, but an artifact.
