I don't ever recall seeing so much bad advice posted on any one topic before.
The best way to clean Flyer track is with a wire brush about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long with a long handle. Hardware store item. Wear a dust mask or respirator mask. Asbestos was widely used as a scenery base in the 1950's, and other scenery substances and basement crud and mold can also be irritating or toxic Work outdoors or else vacuum up any dust produced immediately. Wear the mask while you are vacuuming, too. The Kline S track I have seen has pins too wide to mate with real Flyer, and the rail metal was too soft to be of practical use as toy train track. Perhaps it has been improved. I have not seen much of it. Rubber roadbed should be washed with a mild solution of dish detergent and water, and a soft plastic bristled brush. The American Flyer S Gauge track system is by far the best American toy train track system ever made. Accept no subsittutes! Glean this.
