I forgot to mention: small pits can be sanded out, but don't forget, you are
making the top of the track thinner! Sanded track shouldn't have any sharp
edges at the pits (because of the sanding), but it does encourage electrical
arcing, which CAN lead to reverse unit cycling and early wear-through of the
rail top. As to damaging plastic wheels, I am more concerned with sharp
edges at the ends of the track pieces. After assembling your track, I would
recommend checking the joints for sharp "burrs" or edges, and file or sand
them down.
