Hi,

I don't know what DAMHIKT: means.

However, as far as the use of oil on Flyer track is concerned, I direct our attention
to Instructions For Assembling And Operating American Flyer 3/16" Scale Trains And
Equipment. On page 42 it talks about lubricating the locos and goes on to state,
"After oiling, run train around track a few times and then wipe the rails to remove
any oil that might have run down on them. This not only keeps the rails bright and
shiny, but provides a good electrical contact and prevents the drive wheels from
skidding." On the one hand, it sounds like they are just cautioning us not to have
excess oil on the tracks, yet it also sounds like they are advocating a light coating
of oil on the tracks, but not so much as to promote wheel slippage.

I have found repeatedly in Flyer manuals, they recommend the use of FINE sandpaper, so
at least that part is clear.

I know we can do whatever we want to do. IMHO, it's always nice to know what was the
original intent.

Subject: [S-Trains] Cleaning AF track with sandpaper is the pits

  DAMHIKT:

OKAY: If you insist on using sandpaper, use only a high-grade paper --
the 3- or 4-digit grits used in the very final stages of auto body
work. Put a drop of oil to moisten, but don't soak.

BETTER: Use 0000 [white] synthetic sandpaper blocks (looks like a
synthetic kitchen scrubbing pad) and gently stroke along the rails.
These are available in woodworking shops and sometimes in the paint
section of the Big Boxes like Home Depot and Lowes. Requires a bit
more Elbow Grease [doesn't Chris Zizzo sell that, too? ;-) ]

If your "rusty" or beat-up track is so far gone the top of the rails
are pitted, forget trying to save it. It'll kill plastic wheels over
time. Use circles of it for picture frames on the walls of your train
  room.
