I went to Toy Fair on Sunday. K-Line had 2 pieces of this rolling stock there; the white B&O box and the Hooker triple dome tank. I got to handle them.
The tank car is clearly 3/16ths. The ladder is plated and toy like, but the tank looks good. Paint looked thick and poorly applied. I assumed that it was a pre-production prototype but the sales people said that it was a production model at first. Then they backtracked. I don't think they were too well informed. The box car looks just plain wrong. It is too tall and looks too big for the trucks. The skirting overhangs the wheels and simply does not look like any boxcar I have ever seen. I believe that this is an 027 car on S trucks. The sales people were unsure of the difference between 3/16ths. molds and 027 molds, but they did confirm that these are former Marx cars. The trucks looked OK. They are solid, no springing. When I expressed my disappointment in the boxcars and the finish, the sales people (a man and a woman) replied. "They're only twenty bucks." I guess you have to take that into consideration. Perhaps the kitbashers among us will find plenty of material here. I think that the tankers could look really nice just by replacing the ladder.
