I just wanted to thank the moderator and the group for accepting us into this
wonderful forum. We definitely look foward to making a positive contributions to this
passion we all have for American Flyer - here is I our first offering:
Smoke in Tender Bellows Replacemnet by the Gilbert Guru
In the center of the frame of the sit unit, there are 2 flat head screws side by side,
looking down from the top of the sit unit, between the gear and the smoke box. Center
the lever on the gear so that straddles these 2 screws and remove them. Un-solder the
wires that go to the tender truck rivets if they are too short (probably will be), and
the sit should be apart from the sheet metal frame. Remove hex head from gear. Next,
turn sit unit over, and remove the 4 flathead screws that will allow you to remove
smoke box from sit frame. Clean off the fabric and glue off both fiberboard pieces
with a sharp knife or Exacto, utility, etc (scrape them). Starting with the
fiberboard that is attached to the smoke box, take some Elmers glue, or goop, and coat
the edge of the fiberboard (whatever adhesive you chose to use must not set up fast
like super glue). Take the fabric and wrap it around the fiberboard, eye it up so it
is even around the edge, leaving the ends that come to!
gether at one side of the unit or the other, not top or bottom. Where the ends
overlap, glue also. Using Elmers or the like gives you time to position the fabric
before it dries to the fiber. Once you get the fabric positioned, let set up and dry.
Next step is to put the smoke box back onto the frame. Next, take the other
fiberboard piece with the eccentric crank, and position it inside the fabric square,
and replace the hex screw. With your finger, rotate the armature so the fiberboard
goes inside the fabric, leaving the inside edge exposed. Glue the inside edge of the
fabric (you can be liberal with the glue, about 1/8" wide). Rotate the armature to
bring the fiber board back out to the edge of the fabric. Let dry, and you should be
ready to smoke away. If you have any other problems just let me know. This is a
tedious project - I'd sure like to know how they did it at Gilbert in 1946.
Ofcourse there are many ways to get any job done - this is just the Guru's method.
