I saw the prototype in a train collection years ago. The metal case contained a loud speaker and a capacitor. The idea was for the capacitor to hold an electrical charge and discharge it thru the speaker when the button was pressed. It must have make quite a bang because after a couple of times it destroyed the speaker cone. I guess they couldn't find a strong enough speaker to go into production.
