Tom,
Gilbert did make the Track Gang, both pre-war and
post-war, I believe. Joe's Train Repair is now
reproducing this extremely rare accessory and has
produced all new figure castings which have been
reinforced to overcome the breakage problems of
previous repros and these figures are mounted using a
specially-produced machine stud as AC Gilbert did for
Sam the Semaphore Man. Bases are done, figures are in
hand, and painting has begun. These Track Gangs are
expected to be available at York in April.
BTW, the never-produced item you are probably thinking
of is the Car Washer, another really neat accessory.
