http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-879176,curpg-2.cms The Times of India, October 9, 2004 Parliament to wear nuclear shield Bhaskar Roy Times News Network [ Saturday, October 09, 2004 12:08:36 am ] NEW DELHI: It could be a throwback to the chilling scenes of Nicholas Meyer's 1983 blockbuster 'The Day After'. Already two groups of officers from Parliament's security have received training at Defence Research and Development Organisation's Gwalior unit in dealing with a situation moments after a nuclear attack on the most politically sensitive structure in the Capital. The third batch is being despatched later this month for a similar course. Under the cloak of secrecy, Parliament House is being fitted with a shield to withstand a nuclear, biological or chemical attack. A proposal prepared by the previous joint parliamentary committee on security will be placed before the new team for approval soon. The committee headed by deputy Lok Sabha Speaker CS Athwal is slated to meet within a fortnight. As the first step, the Central Hall is being made fully air-conditioned to enable it to serve as a refuge before rescue operation can start for the country's political leadership in a hypothetical situation. Already preliminary work has begun to bring about the necessary modifications in the high-ceilinged hall for effective air-conditioning. Still haunted by the 2001 terrorist attack on Parliament, authorities have been in touch with DRDO for a preventive shield against any possible nuclear, biological or chemical (NBC) attack. After recent upgradation of the groundlevel security system making physical intrusion into the Parliament premises almost impossible, the focus has now shifted to the possibility of more sophisticated mode of attack. As per the plan Parliament premises are to be fitted with powerful sensor equipment to catch hint of any such attack. The Central Hall will be equipped with oxygen masks, special cloaks and shoes to deal with an emergency. "Those sheltered there will be safe until evacuation takes place," a source in Parliament security said. The other buildings to receive such shields later include South and North Blocks that house the PMO as well as crucial ministries of home, defence, foreign affairs and finance. _________________________________ SOUTH ASIANS AGAINST NUKES (SAAN): An informal information platform for activists and scholars concerned about Nuclearisation in South Asia South Asians Against Nukes Mailing List: archives are available @ two locations May 1998 - March 2002: <groups.yahoo.com/group/sap/messages/1> Feb. 2001 - to date: <groups.yahoo.com/group/SAAN_/messages/1> To subscribe send a blank message to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> South Asians Against Nukes Website: www.s-asians-against-nukes.org SOUTH ASIANS AGAINST NUKES (SAAN): An informal information platform for activists & scholars concerned about the dangers of Nuclearisation in South Asia SAAN Mailing List: To subscribe send a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] SAAN Website: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sacw/saan [OLD URL: http://www.mnet.fr/aiindex/NoNukes.html ] SAAN Mailing List Archive : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SAAN_/ ________________________________ DISCLAIMER: Opinions expressed in materials carried in the posts do not necessarily reflect the views of SAAN compilers. aterials carried in the posts do not necessarily reflect the views of SAAN compilers.
