Submissions for the 10th edition of VIS Vienna Independent Shorts can be made 
exclusively via reelport.com until the 13th of January 2013.

We are looking forward to receiving your films. For your information please 
find the submission guidelines below.
 
Being the largest short film festival in Austria and the Euroregion of Centrope 
its primary task is to represent international short film to its fullest 
extent. VIS Vienna Independent Shorts has International Competitions and 
National Competitions.
COMPETITIONS AND AWARDS

International Competitions

The international competitions consist of short films with a maximum length of 
30 minutes without limitations concerning country of production. The 
international competitions are divided into three sections: Fiction & 
Documentary, Animation Avantgarde and Music Video Competition. Fiction & 
Documentary and Animation Avantgarde each have their own jury and all sections 
have their own awards.

• Fiction & Documentary (fiction, documentary, narrative animation) - Awards: 
Vienna Short Film Award, Audience Award; and other awards.

• Animation Avantgarde (experimental, non narrative animation) - Awards: Asifa 
Austria Award, Audience Award; and other awards.

• Music Video Competition - Award: Audience Award

National Competition

The National Competition is conceived as a showcase of current Austrian short 
film-making. The competition is open to short films with Austria as country of 
production. For coproductions of several countries, Austria must be listed 
first as country of production. The nationality of the filmmaker has no effect 
on the eligibility.

• Austrian Competition - Awards: Austrian Short Film Award, Audience Award

• Music Video Competition - Award: Audience Award

Regulations for all competitions 2013

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Each short film must be entered for one of the competitions (Fiction and 
Documentary OR Animation Avantgarde OR National Competition OR Music Video 
Competition). However, should the need arise, the selection committees reserve 
the right to assign it to another competition or special program at VIS Vienna 
Independent Shorts 2013.

Short films from the years 2011, 2012 and 2013 of up to 30 minutes may be 
submitted. All languages are accepted. If the original language of the 
submitted film is neither German nor English, there must be English subtitles. 
If the film is screened at the festival and the language of the film is not 
English, a copy of the film with English subtitles has to be provided (see 
section 5)

2. EXCLUSIVITY

The entrant agrees that his or her film will not be screened publicly in Vienna 
from the 1st of December 2012 until he or she has received a letter of 
rejection (due 1st of April) or, if the film is being screened at the festival, 
until after the end of the festival. Exempt from this rule are private 
screenings and television broadcasts.

3. DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION

The submission deadline is January 13, 2013. The following material is needed 
together with each submitted film:

1) At least 1 film still (300 dpi)
2) Brief director's biography (max. 350 
characters)
3) Director's filmography
4) A list with previous screenings of 
this submission
5) Main credits

4. RIGHTS

The person or institution submitting the film is responsible for clearing all 
rights to the content of the work. By submitting, they state that they are 
authorized representatives thereof, i. e. that screening or other use of the 
film by the Festival does not infringe rights held by third parties. They 
furthermore shall indemnify the festival against all third-party claims in 
connection with screening / using the film in the course of the Festival. This 
includes covering any legal costs that might be incurred.

The owner(s) of the rights of the selected film(s) grant VIS Vienna Independent 
Shorts the right to make copies of the selected film(s) for the purposes of 
screening at VIS Vienna Independent Shorts 2013 as well as archiving these 
copies.

The festival reserves the right to show excerpts of up to one minute of the 
films included in the festival program for advertising purposes on television 
or in cinemas. This right expires four weeks after the end of the festival. 
Furthermore the festival reserves the unrestricted right to publish, for 
advertising purposes, film stills of those films shown at the festival.

The festival is entitled to show the chosen films during the duration of the 
festival.

5. NOTIFICATION

The festival chooses freely from the submitted films. The entrants are not in 
any way entitled to have their film shown at VIS. They will be notified whether 
or not their films will be shown until the 1st of April 2013.

6. SCREENING COPIES

Accepted formats:
Film: 16mm and 35mm;
Video: DigiBeta, Betacam SP
File: DCP 
(2k, 24p, compatible with Doremi Server), .mov (ProRes / H.264), .mp4 (ProRes / 
H.264)
If a DCP is submitted a backup file (in one of the above mentioned 
formats) must be submitted along with the DCP

The screening copies must arrive at the festival office no later than the 1st 
of May 2013.

If the original version of the film or video is in a language other than 
English, the film must be subtitled in English. The festival does not bear the 
cost of film rental. The selected filmmakers are not awarded compensation for 
participating in the festival.

7. INSURANCE

The films will be insured by the Festival for the whole time of their being in 
the festivalʻs possession.

8. DISPATCH

Dispatch inside Austria or from abroad: By mail or courier. All deliveries from 
outside the European Union must be marked with the phrase “no commercial value 
- for cultural purposes only”. We will not accept shipments for which we would 
have to bear shipping fees, duties, taxes or customs duties, and will not 
assume any responsibility for such shipments.

9. DISPATCH COSTS

The applicant is responsible for the costs of sending the viewing and screening 
copies to the festival. The festival covers the costs of returning/forwarding 
screening copies.

10. RETURN DISPATCH

All screening copies will be sent back to the applicant as soon as possible 
after the festival.

Please note: Preview copies will not be returned, but stored in the VIS Vienna 
Independent Shorts archive.

directly on reelport or send a DVD to reelport (upload charge 5 reels(5 EUR)).
