See a thread from some time ago: "Why Mathematica is not my language
of choice".

I do not like functional programming languages. This not withstanding
I learned a lot from the lectures on lambda calculus in the early sixties
from Dirk van Dalen.
And I'm in good company: the originator of Python Guido van Rossum.

Python knows some functional constructs, but in the future there will be less.
In Python 3k there will be still something like map(), but other "goodies"
will be gone.
