I'd like to draw you attention to CoBlitz: http://codeen.cs.princeton.edu/coblitz/ Its a cache proxy content distribution network for large files. It works by prefixing http://coblitz.codeen.org/ to the URL of the download file you want to serve, and CoBlitz will do the rest. For example, take one of Sage's less capable download mirrors, prefix it with http://coblitz.codeen.org/ post this new link as the download link, and you have a new high-bandwidth mirror, for free!
Of course, there are other options for resource efficient P2P distribution, such BitTorrent and Dijjer, but these require a software installation on the part of the downloaders first, which is OK for many people, but not all.
