You are doing something wrong. Note:
* "installed Sage on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with"
* sage-4.4.4-linux-64bit-ubuntu_8.04.4_lts-x86_64-Linux
You need to download the sage binary for ubuntu 10.04, not 8.04.
