Yes, that would be possible and actually implemented in #10115. The changes in #10115 are purely syntactical (after macro expansion, the code is byte-for-byte the same). At some time in the future (ticket #9678) however, when sig_on() will really be rewritten, it might be harder (but probably still doable) to make _sig_on still work, albeit with less features.
