I will see if gcc-4.0.1 from xcode 3.1.4 fared better when I get to work in about 2 hours. If not I will have to switch to the 4.2 shipped with that version of xcode. Unfortunately the switch has to be done manually.
I tried the gcc-4.2.1 from my prefix but that created numerous problems at run time (between versions of freetype).
