first thanks to everybody for their supportive messages! @Volker: Would you prefer the "tinc" method (I would have to first install that on OS X 10.4, which should be doable), or the "ssh remote port forwarding" method proposed by Nils Bruin? I would need more info/testing for both of these, but the latter seems to be quicker (both you and me already having logins on sage.math.washington.edu).
