can you compile C programs from shell at all?
E.g. try if your favoirite helloworld.c can be built and run
by
$ gcc -o helloworld helloworld.c
$ ./helloworld

just in case:
// cut here

#include <stdio.h>
int main(void)
{
    puts("Hello World!");
}
