According to http://wiki.sagemath.org/SupportedPlatforms#Sage_6.1.1,
2GB should be enough to build Sage. But it could indeed be that you need to overcommit more than that, so you need either swap or enable overcommitting (assuming this is Linux: what does "sysctl vm.overcommit_memory" say when run as root?)
