But not in Sage's Maxima, because 

(%i1) sqrt(x^2);
(%o1)                               abs(x)
(%i2) domain:complex;
(%o2)                               complex
(%i3) sqrt(x^2);
                                         2
(%o3)                              sqrt(x )
