Some default questions (I assume “sage” refers to 8.4-b0):
- got VERSION.txt?
- got $SAGE_LOCAL/bin/sage-version.h?
- are the contents of these files correct?
I also assume you’ve checked this sort of thing, but never hurts to ask.
Yes, files are there. Not sure whether they are "correct" though.

Oh, it looks like https://trac.sagemath.org/ticket/25150 finally got
merged. In that case VERSION.txt shouldn't have anything to do with
it.
Hmm--try deleting $SAGE_LOCAL/bin/sage-version.sh and see if that fixes it.
Thanks Erik for the suggestion. Actually, I had to recompile stuff in
Sage and it appeared that version started to work again... mystery.
