Since I found an example of a pickle that cannot be unpickled in Python-3 (and as far as I can see it is independent of optional packages), I opened #28444. I believe losing data in the transition from python-2 to python-3 is a blocker. It seems to me that the error occurs in Python's pickle module, but I am not sure.
