moreover, as far as we talk specifically about developing Sage library, 
what gets included, after reviewing,  in the library are branches rebased 
over the current beta, possibly after some squashing---Volker knows better.

Thus these un-rebased branches still exist (in Sage's git trac repo), 
unless one cleans them up, but they aren't very useful, as far as I am 
concerned - at least  I think it would be pretty unusual to re-use them for 
anything.

While I agree that in some cases rewriting repo history may be harmful, in 
Sage library  case it seems to be done on the regular basis, and noone 
complains.
