People ask whether spiritual discipline is needed to supplement study and
inquiry. If we read the necessary texts, perform the prescribed exercises in
logic, are these not enough? It is like asking whether laying down the cables
to bring electric current to every part of the building is enough! Why do we
need bulbs, tubes and fans? Spiritual Discipline is a bulb, the switch the
fan. The insulin injection for the diabetic patient is the "inquiry";
restriction in dietary habits is the Spiritual Discipline. Both inquiry and
Spiritual Discipline are needed to discover the Divinity latent in one and to
manifest it.
