You could possibly check the default gateway.  Sometimes these are not
accessible from the internet.  You would need to dial out and verify.
Otherwise if you can ensure that your ip is released and then when you get
an ip again you will know it's back up.  I am think a url check on your
router perhaps.

I have cable internet access. I now know that I can check the DNS server
with Salive to see it the cable is down. I have a router that has both
cable/dsl access and dial-up. I can use Salive to switch when the cable
goes down. What can I check to see if the cable is back up???  I can't
really use the DNS check because if this is a local cable issue, the DNS
will still be up and now that I have dialed to the internet I will see it
as good. My local cable can still be down so I don't want to switch back.
What can I check to see if the cable is really back up????
