Steve, I make no claim that this is "the best way of monitoring my Dell enterprise servers for hardware failures", but here is what I do.
OPenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) cannot send emails itself. There is a Dell OpenManage app called IT Assistant (ITA) that serves as a management console. That app can alert. It talks to the server agent OMSA, and then it can generate emails based on what it finds in OMSA. ITA can also discovery and inventory (Dell) servers and clients. That being said, I don't use it. I find it is easier to just use SA to do an SNMP check of the server in question. It's fatser and easier. The trick is finding the OID for the item you want to check, and finding out what values it can have. You also have to enable and configure SNMP on the servers and monitoring system, but I figured it out, so anybody can. Hope this helps. They have Dell openmanage software installed and this logs events into the event log but for some reason this takes over 5 minutes to query using the Servers Alive eventlog COM check, this is not ideal as it hold up the servers alive monitoring progress. The open manage software can run an external program or send SNMP traps (it doesn't look like it can send emails !?) . Is there a decent program you can recommend to collect SNMP traps and then send emails or integrate into Servers Alive when a specific trap is received? Or is there a program I can install locally on the server to monitor the event log and send and email if a certain even occurs? thanks in advance Steve ______________________________________________________________________ This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
