Looks like you understand it. The text box is used for making sure your page has not been replaced or in some other way hijacked or redirected. If you leave it blank it just checks whether or not a 200 is received with no content checking.

It connects to the web page and if it returns a 200 code then it is considered working. If it returns any other code (other than 2xx I think) i.e. 500, 403, 404, then it alerts according to your alert settings. If you use the %e paramater it will tell you more details on the error.
