Patrick,
I am sorry, I am in the US and a site visit is probably not an option, but I did want to pass on my thoughts on Servers Alive to you. I have been running SA for almost 10 years in my various roles with different companies. It’s the first thing I do when I go into a new environment, purchase a copy of Servers Alive and get it installed. If you are looking for a tool that: n Will automate checks of various network devices and services n Can alert you of failed checks in more ways that you can imagine n Log historical information in SQL n Provides great, rapid support via this email list, [We think Dirk never sleeps] n Is very customizable in the configuration of checks, alerts and schedules, n Just works, and works, and works, Then SA is for you. I have never come across a tool that provides all the monitoring and alerting capabilities SA does for anywhere near the price. Nor double or triple the price. However, if you are looking for tool that also helps you “manage the resolution” of the event, then SA is lacking here. It is NOT a help desk-type of solution that allows you to assign issues to staff, etc. – although you could have SA alerts automatically create tickets in a help desk system……. Nor is it simple to programmatically “build” or “redefine” checks. You will spend some time sitting in front the user interface entering checks manually, and coping/editing them. I consider this a very small price to pay for a tool this critical to the successful operation of our environment. Once you have it set up – it just works. I am willing to provide more information about our specific configuration/usage if you want to contact me directly via email. Please note, the opinions listed here are my own and not necessarily those of my company – although my network administrators also swear by it now…. -Tom Vogl VP of Information Services Leed’s From: Servers Alive Discussion List [mailto:sal...@woodstone.nu] On Behalf Of Patrick Ward Sent: Wednesday, February 03, 2010 5:41 AM To: Servers Alive Discussion List Subject: [SA-list] Request: Looking to see Servers Alive in Action Hi, I am currently looking into setting up a new monitoring system, and Servers Alive seems to have all the functionality we require. However, I would like to see a system that has already been running for a while and that is monitoring various types of equipment. I work in the Thames Valley area (UK) and would really appreciate an invite to view a working example, Regards/Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Patrick Ward Group Systems Support Analyst Porsche Cars Great Britain Ltd.
