Adding a diskspace check to 1000 servers can be done in about 1 minute asuming you have a list of all your servers in a textfile. dirk ----- Original Message ----- From: Thomas Bayer (mailto:mehrso...@googlemail.com) To: Servers Alive Discussion List (mailto:salive@woodstone.nu) Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2010 11:00 AM Subject: Re: [TP-SPAM] - Re: [SA-list] Feature Request - Character set not allowed
Sorry but Network Discovery is one of best features. This would save so much time adding checks. I don't know if most of your clients have not more than 2 servers. I think I know what I'd like to check on my network but I'm not willing spending weeks adding checks manually. Just let's say you want to check Diskspace <10GB all of your 100,1000,... servers. Good luck with SA! SA is a nice and easy to use tool if you don't have more than 5 servers but it really get's on your nerv if you have more. If a Discovery feature won't get implemented there's no reason for me staying with this tool. 2010/7/10 Dirk Bulinckx <d...@woodstone.nu (mailto:d...@woodstone.nu)> There is dev being done on SA...don't worry about that. If you look at http://beta.woodstone.nu (http://beta.woodstone.nu) you can view some of the changes already. Dev is slower then before that's correct. However due to the current size/options of SA it's no longer possible to just jump in and do it quickly. Network discovery is not in SA because I personaly don't want it in SA. >From my point of view as admin you should know what is running in your network. Things that are running in your network and that shouldn't be running in it, aren't those that should be monitored by you either. I agree that most people would like a db based hostfile (opposed to the current text based). I do think that we will go for a db based system however I do see problems with it too. If the hostfile (db or textbased) will be documented and clear, then I'm sure we will get a lot of support questions due to the fact that people will make changes directly within the file/db. And probably changes that aren't ok :-( But as said we will probably go for a db based structure. "Support" for popular apps like Exchange, Sharepoint,.... is possible but IF we add this it will be as with all the checks within Servers Alive, ONE check at the time when adding it. We did think about some "wizard" alike system were it's possible to add more then one check at the time but then we would need to change the alerting part too (too long to explain why :-)) If you have a group of check for a particular server it's already possible to "copy" that for a new host, and this by using the EDIT-IMPORT option. If you hide/unhide entries they are only again visible after a cycle if the update during checking is disabled. About the SNMP trap alerts, not sure what is exactly missing in the filtering/altering. Some tips could help. A real reporting engine is not part of SA, that is correct. From my point of view reporting should be done a by reporting tool and this based on the db based logging. We do lack OS support, we only support it upto Windows 2003. Running on Win2008/7 is indeed not supported. But plannend for the next major release. dirk ----- Original Message ----- From: Mark Perry (mailto:mark.pe...@telephoneticsvip.co.uk) To: Servers Alive Discussion List (mailto:salive@woodstone.nu) Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2010 12:45 AM Subject: RE: [TP-SPAM] - Re: [SA-list] Feature Request - Character set not allowed Perfmon is fine if you are diagnosing a particular issue, not so good for alerting. One of the problems is that IT are more and more needing to show audit/alert trails. SA is starting to fall short of this e.g. I now need to worry about PCIDSS. SA is falling short of the mark for many things these days e.g. 1. Locking up Gui during Check cycles. 2. After hiding entries, unhide requires a cycle to see the entries again. 3. SNMP trap receiving lacks adequate filters/reports/alerting 4. SA still doesnt have an enterprise level database/reporting engine 5. SA only supports running on legacy OS e.g. Pre 2003 This list is off the top of my head and by no means exhaustive, I agree that SA is no longer in its prime, needs a severe update and get back in the game. Ill still use SA for many standard checks but I am having to look into other tools though I wont mention what they are here. Dont get me wrong SA still rules for simplicity! I would also like to offer my opinion that spending time on an autodiscover feature is less important than the current task of revamping the host file system. If the host file was a different file (i.e. a database) then you could use any number of other autodiscover utilities and do a mass import. This would also address the timeout because presumably you could write your own utility to do mas changes. As far monitoring internal health of systems many of those can be monitored using the perfmon checks. Wouldn't hurt to look at what is available using perfmon and then stating what else in particular you would like to check. Servers Alive could really use some new features OpenSource Tools already have. For instance I'm missing: - Autodiscover Hots by ip or ip range -> Then get a screen with checkboxes for the usual things like ping, services, processes and so on - Multiple edit of check settings -> Change pingout timeout for multiple entries - Copy a server group with checks and then rename the ip and hostname for all checks - Support for monitoring internal health of popular enterprise software like Exchange, Sharepoint, SQL, Active Directory - Visualize my infrastructure with status from ServersAlive like http://www.nagvis.org/screenshots (http://www.nagvis.org/screenshots) I'd like to get the autodiscover feature as soon as possible because I need a awful lot of time adding new servers and checks to SA...
