OK, looking more closely at this now. So a check that is scheduled not to
happen in the middle of the night is "unchecked" rather than "unavailable"? And
therefore 0605 would prevent that giving a confusing UP when it starts checking
again? Now that *is* helpful. Testing now - will report back on findings.

Cheers,

Ian

hmm typo in the mail.

The example should show:
               0605,0405
(and not 65,45)

Exactly what I told you :-) too many alerts.

That's why within the code (and within the current version you have), there is
a way to reduce the number of alerts :-)

Create HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DBU Consulting\Servers
Alive\StartUp\StatusChangeAlertExceptionList (string)
and give it the list of combination it should ignore.

For example:
               65,45

0605 : going from 06 (unchecked) to 05 (up) has to be ignored (meaning don't
trigger the alert)
0405: going from 04 (maintenance) to 05 (up) has to be ignored.

List of possible numbers:
               01 down
02 possible down (should never be visible as this is
an internal status used during the second knock)
               03 unavailable
               04 maintenance
               05 up
               06 unchecked
07 possible unavailable (should never be visible as
this is an internal status used during the second knock)

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks Dirk - that's implemented. It certainly fixes the original problem (not
getting an up after the unavailable), but as you suggested it does indeed
significantly increase the number of alerts, in ways that I hadn't foreseen.
For example, the check has a schedule to not check for an hour at midnight
(housekeeping etc), and an up alert goes out after that. Additionally, the
check (like all our checks) has second knock set, and a "possible down" sent
out an alert just now.

Given the number of additional alerts that are coming out, I'm not sure if it's
viable as a solution to the original problem. For this particular one I could
feasibly lose the dependency and check this process all the time, which would
avoid the "unavailable" issue arising, but I guess that brings its own
problems.

Anyone else having a difficulty like this, or am I alone?

Cheers,

Ian

And did the new type of WHEN for the alerts help?

Maybe easier: How about an alert check box for “Any Change of
State”.
Then you would get an email for each change: DOWN, UNAVAILABLE, UP.

OK, that explains some alerting anomalies that we've been experiencing, where
an alert is sent out about a service that is down, but never get a subsequent
up notification.

I think this exposes a problem that needs to be fixed. Can I request, then, a
couple of alternatives to fix this? In the "when" tab for alerts, could you
EITHER change "when back up after a down" to "when back up after a down or an
unavailable", OR could you add an extra tick box for "and when back after an
unavailable"?

Cheers,

Ian

No it won't as there is an intermediate status being UNAVAILABLE

Question: if a check is set to alert on down, and when back after a down, would
it still send an UP alert if the check went through the sequence DOWN -
UNAVAILABLE - UP?
