straight out of the box and not being able to build is enough
motivation.

I've had a quick dig out of the C code I was using to build the models
and had forgotten that it's tied to a C prototype of the 3d code which
relies on the obscure and aged Allegro 2d graphics library and is
currently outputting both the style of models used by the engine and a
semi pre-compiled style that I was experimenting with but which made
everything more complicated and memory hungry without providing
sufficient benefit. So I'll rip off the useful bits and post that at
some later date. Hopefully soon.
