Hmm, is this portable to apache in case I ever need to? (may need to host my

I know this doesn't answer your question cause I very rarely use SSI
anymore... but why don't you turn it into STM and <RCinclude /menu.htm>?
It'll do what you want it to and I find it a LOT easier to keep track of.
Nearly everything is server script and cscript with me these days.
