SPAM and Blacklists are probably best left in the realm of Religion and
Politics. Not everyone is going to agree and the debate has a tendency to
get very heated. That said, I just find it interesting that the people who
are the most vocal supporters (for the most part) of a non-restricted
Internet and open source (how dare any one person/company make all that
money) are the same ones who want to impose their moral judgment on what
should and should not be allowed to travel across the Internet....a service
which the senders are paying for too by the way. I'm not in favor of
"SPAM", but there are ways INDIVIDUALS can block unsolicited email at their
doorsteps....even easier than the paper counterparts that come through snail
mail. The USA has long held a belief that it is better to let a guilty man
free than to imprison an innocent man. It seems however, that when it comes
to unrestricted use of the Internet, many people feel its better to block
legitimate email if it helps "reduce" (not eliminate) junk mail.
If email hosts want to, they can, rather easily, block the sending of
multiple outbound mail which would clearly be in their economic interest
(bandwidth and processor time costs money). This policy itself would
greatly reduce the amount of unsolicited emails, but to be forced to, or to
be unable to receive legitimate mail because even ONE of their subscribers
has been blacklisted goes far beyond what most people want the Internet to
be. Its real easy to legislate, its much harder to be free.
All I ask for is consistency. If you support blacklists, then you should
also support the policing of all Internet use to adhere to someone's idea of
right and wrong. Period.
