(I meant "HP Smart Tank 7602 All-In-One Printer"
below).

------------------------------------------------------------

I just bought the HP 7602 printer.
I think I have the escl backend installed, at least it is
included in the package of sane backends that I
installed. At the following site:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201311

it says that the "HP Smart Tank 7601 All-In-One Printer"
is supported. I saw something about an issue with
scanner usb connections not being supported, maybe
that is the problem?

Printing works with cups.

I don't have sane-airscan installed.

If your HP printer is ~5 years old or less, it should be a driverless IPP printer. Then you are better off without HPLIP. For scanning the "escl" backend should work, or you install sane-airscan. For printing your system's CUPS and cups-filters installation should already bring everything.

Which hplip version is installed on your OS?

Yeah, further, make sure you have the hplip packages installed.
HP's support for their multifunction machines are good for
scanning which is why we don't have native SANE support for them.

    Cheers,
    Ralph

I have hplip-3.23.12 installed and it works for printing, but I
don't know how to implement scanning if sane doesn't detect
    the scanner.
