the backend has multiple maintainers, see the Authors file in the
source. The GL843+ are different enough from the GL841, that you
should probably look at adding another 'sub' backend, instead of
modifying the GL841 code. I already have some code to do this for the
GL846, but it does not even compile at the moment.
