I too have witnessed the dead air in the Satchmo chat room, particularly when I was building the Pandora's Gems e-commerce site. I'm not exactly sure why having IRC on while being away from the IRC chatroom is at all useful.
I'm new to Satchmo, and I'd be willing to visit the #satchmo room more often if an allotted time was put aside each week for new users and developers.
