IMHO, haystack is definitely the way to go here.

It really is pretty easy to use. Setting up the solr backend can be a
little weird, but you can use other backends if it is too gross for
you. (It is in java). I've done some faceting like you are talking
about in a resource library application and it was surprising how easy
haystack made it.

My experience is that haystack was really easy to use for faceting
type stuff. It made a newegg style interface possible and kind of fun.
However, it was a lot more difficult to use it as a full site search
solution. Then you start to run into the problems Stuart mentions,
with getting weighting right and stuff like that. Also, it can be
difficult to get all your content indexed. (Haystack likes models, it
doesn't work with information in templates as easily.)
