I have a similar setup (Apache/wsgi and PostgreSQL) only I have >300,000 products (!!!)
So I just tried it and it takes a while, but I do get a response back. Have run ANALYZE or VACUUM on your tables? With 40,000 products, you may need to. That said, it seems that there is an index missing on the Satchmo tables.
