I've had a problem a couple times where the page will error out when showing products because of all the thumbnailing that has to happen. Obviously this only happens the first couple times, but if you have 30k products, maybe you are viewing a subset that hasn't ever been viewed before, and the thumbnailing is making the request take too long. You won't get any errors in the logs because nothing actually broke, just took too long.
