If people are interested in this kind of lifestyle I'd strongly suggest
checking out living on a sailboat.  Very off the grid, tons of fun, great
community and more affordable than you might think (you can get a pretty
good boat for $5-10K).  Unfortunately, long waiting lists for live-aboard
slips.
