For the freezer method you need to wrap it a few layers of freezer bags to prevent moisture getting on it.
I have used the trial version of zar with success before - (Zero Assumption Recovery) - you have to install it on a secondary machine then hook up the HD to that machine. The trial version lets you only recover like 4 folders at a time but if the trial version works it might be worth it to buy it to get the rest of your data..
