Ok, here's a first reasonable step toward implementing this:
Add a third "format" parameter to source types:
source(audio:'a, video:'a, midi:'a, format:'a)
Whose values are in one-to-one correspondance with the various %formats.
If this sounds good for you, we could start by adding it with PCM format for
each source and operator and starting hacking from a safe starting point..
