Flac generates a lot of data. It could be the case that the mp3 encoder is able to deliver smaller amount of data quicker and that it is enough to avoid a timeout.. I am testing locally here. It is working but I've already had to increase mplayer pre-buffering to avoid underruns.. I'll let you know if I have some ideas/results/fixes...
