For the particular problem of handling minor disconnections, I don't
think that a buffer can achieve the same thing. A buffer can absorb a
temporarily slowness, but on average it does not allow to accomodate a
lower speed or disconnections. The delayed switch thing really inserts
silence, so it does more than cope with local distortions.
