Which codec were you using for video, theora?

Well, if you are planning to encode and stream video around the clock,
you are likely to need better hardware than for audio only, just to keep
the machine running at a reasonable load average.

The only case I can think of for rendering video in non-real-time is if
you are only producing content for a certain number of hours per day,
and you have off-air time to catch up. Then you upload to YouTube or
whatever and begin the cycle again.

Even then, the slow hardware may be a false economy for time-sensitive
media such as journalism. You can build a server farm from older
machines, but then your electricity and cooling costs go up.

If you are streaming video 24/7 then the cost of fast hardware is
probably trivial compared to the amount of bandwidth you are going to need.

Please mail me offlist, I can introduce you to the other community
members interested in developing video support. As for realistic, that
only depends on how much time and effort the community wants to put into
this.

I am told by public and community broadcasters in Europe that there is
currently no ready-made open source solution for running a TV station,
so it's not like we are re-inventing the wheel.

Cheers!

Daniel
