As far as I know, the only way to achieve that is to set the buffer
attribute to 8, indeed.

One way to see what's happening is to log the buffer's value. You can
do that using the logfile argument.

I am not sure that we do have a specific operator to induce
time-delays. It may be possible to script one though, I'll have to
think about it :-)
