Sorry to hook in here again: if you even go beyond "Debian
Testing" you'll get to areas where nearly no distribution
will just deliver it, don't speak of the world beyond
Linux...

I don't even know of a distribution that comes with Skak at
all except Debian (and descendents) by means of the TeXLive
included. I'd really keep away from the bleeding edges. And
I'd do this _quite a bit_. Probably the output is not _that_
perfect (it will be better than everything other arround,
anyway) but the potential audience that can actually use
this function will increase dramatically if one can base it
on packages that everybody "just has without even knowing".

If you're at the bleeding edge, you'll have to package the
styles and stuff with scid (which I consider a major design
fault) plus people will most likely not know how to use
them. To come back to my department back then: the usual way
to use a sty was not to set up a texmf and point proper
environment variables there, this was left for the experts
and geeks, but just to copy the same sty to every folder
where it is required. (Resulting in the same file beeing
cluttered arround $HOME/ subdirs) And there we speak about
people who do LaTeX all day...

Additionally, I just had a short look to chessfs, not at the
other packages you mentioned yet. I'd _suggest_ to keep it
out of the _default_ as it is "just" eyecandy. A switch to
enable it would probably be good, or the config file you
mentioned. (Though this will involve some work.)
