I would like to request that an option be created that will allow the Engine
output window to function like the Chessbase GUI analysis window (i.e. scroll
the results of the analysis as each ply is searched; the time to reach a given
ply and the PV for that ply is not overwritten by the next ply's PV but rather
the previous ply PV is preserved in a scrolling window). If this is not
possible, I will cease to use SCID as it is useless for me without this
(previously the default!) behavior. Every chess GUI I have ever seen has this
option (except not anymore for SCID).
Thanks,
Roy

build the Fedora RPM from the scid source. Do you see a way
to get this? Something like configure --fedora or the like
that results in an RPM in the end? (Willem: --debian would
be another target.)
The most straight and easiest way to build Fedora binary RPM is grabbing source
RPM (http://katrine.lpi.ru/kalenkov/scid-3.6.24-8.fc9.src.rpm in my case) and
run command
$rpmbuild --rebuild scid-3.6.24-8.fc9.src.rpm
source RPM file is archive with scid sources (scid-3.6.24.tar.bz2,
photos2007.zip, ratings_2008_4.zip, spelling_2008_4.zip), some simple patches
and installation script. I guess that source RPM file just realize your idea
with --fedora configure option in slightly different way.
But we should
discuss this here and also with Pascal once he's back.
ok.

IMHO the best way would be for scid to make it into the
Fedora distribution.
I will think on this subject.

MessageHello Mikhail!
I see your point with the src-rpm. However, I think a binary rpm distribution
has another target user. Mainly, binary rpms, debs and whatever address users
that do not want to build the software but just use it. Especially in the scid
community I'd guess that there're more chess fans than computer geeks.
Therefore, I'd say that a src-rpm should be availble but does not address this
group.
With my --fedora configure option I tought more in the direction on "how to go
to this src-rpm, and then build it".
In other words, I think it would be nice if the default scid source offers a
way to build a package for specific distributions. This does _not_ make a
binary distribution obsolete but is more thought in the direction to ease up
the src-rpm, src-deb, src-tgz and whatever packages.
Additionally, building a binary package always requires the proper build
environment. In your case Fedora 9. Or put the other way round: I could
generate a binary package for Debian 4 but non for Fedora 9. I'd not even be
able to build a binary package for Debian unstable myself. And this is the
reason why I'd say that contributed binary builds are:
1. a great service for the users
2. should be hosted on linked sites from people who have this build
environment, know the packaging how-to of their distribution and so on.
3. could be used to offer the bleeding edge of development to all users (hence
an addendum to the packages hopefully provided by the distributions as such)
So, packages like those you built will always be complementary to a package
offered by the distribution as such.
