Not that I know of. However, this sounds an interesting idea

Did you load a mask first? If you do not have one you'll
have to create a new. This menue does not make any sense
without a mask loaded.

Pascal: probably it is possible to show only the options of
"Create new mask" and "Open..." in this case to point the
user to what's missing?

I wonder it it would be possible to give a more prominent
feedback or even display position/move annotations if the
mask is opened without a tree window active. Like it is
posed in this question: having an annotation that pops up if
a certain position occurs.

I can not confirm this on Linux. Could it be a bug in OS X?
